The RWCT program
RWCT introduces research-based, instructional methods to help students think reflectively, take ownership of their personal learning, understand the logic of arguments, listen attentively, debate confidently and become independent, life-long learners. The program can be used in upper primary, middle and secondary schools, as well as higher education, for all subjects with existing curricula. RWCT methods promote active inquiry, student-initiated learning, problem-solving, critical thinking, cooperative learning, and authentic assessment. The RWCT project was initiated in 1997 as a professional development program for teachers and teacher educators in the newly democratic countries of Central and South-Eastern Europe, and Central Asia. The project received funding from the Open Society Institute (OSI) and was housed within the International Development Division of the International Reading Association from 1997 to 2001.
In the first ten years of RWCT program delivery, trainers from the RWCT group brought extensive staff development programs in best practices of teaching for active learning and critical thinking to more than 50,000 teachers in over 30 countries on 5 continents, and those teachers taught more than 2 million students using interactive and engaging methods.

The RWCT program continues to expand to new countries and spawn educational projects worldwide.
RWCT is designed to build local capacity.The RWCT project recognizes that local educators' knowledge is critical to the overall success of the project.
Therefore, RWCT is designed to invite modifications that resonate within each country. Delivered by a select group of international educators, RWCT aims to build a solid base of local teacher trainers, giving each education system the capacity for expansion.
For classroom teachers, RWCT training consists of a series of four-five workshops over an 8-12 month period.During these workshops, participants are invited to experience learning in a highly interactive manner, practice the teaching methods demonstrated, adapt them to their own classrooms and circumstances, and substitute national texts for those introduced in training workshops. The participant teachers are encouraged to meet on a monthly basis with colleagues to discuss their progress, and are observed in the classroom.
RWCT has a set of standards and a certification process for both teachers and trainers which is available to all participants and is internationally recognized.
